I think my comments are called for, being that this is an error that is having a negative impact on everyone who is trying to learn windows 7 from microsoft's documents, and that this is an error that has been pointed out long ago, and continues to go uncorrected on their own site.nhb I'm all for being friendly in pointing out innocent mistakes and nicely suggesting a correction, that's the way the world should work.nhb But, when over a year has gone by and people pointing this out have gone ignored.....well, maybe they'll ban me, but they'll also certainly notice the mistake I pointed out as they ban me.nhb Perhaps they'll go and fix it after banning me, and then I can sign up with another email address the next time I have an error I need to post on their forums about.nhb Being that this is the first time I've posted on their forums, I don't forsee that happening anytime soon.

For those that want to continue following this issue.....

....while I do currently have a working workaround to allow me to continue doing my job, I have been following up on this issue on the Microsoft forums.nhb I have found out a few intersting, and disturbing things....

The reason I've been unable to successfully create a working windows pe disk is because the procedure provided by microsoft, which was then used in the book I'm using, is missing a necessary step in order to properly create a windows pe disc.nhb This means that I should have run into the same problem when I created the x86 PE disc.nhb I must have somehow found a solution when that happened, I don't remember that now, but since I do have a working x86 windows PE disc that I did create, I must have done some searching and found the missing step, and forgot about it.nhb I have added a sticky to my .pdf book I am using to note this correction.

The same page with this error also has a typo, just to give you an idea of the quality of work that Microsoft is providing with their documentation for their fine products.

So, now with a working 64 bit Windows PE disc, I am able to run the bcdboot command after deploying the image, and it indicates that it has run and created the boot files necessary.nhb However, when I restart the computer, I still get the bootmgr is missing error.nhb As before, I am easily able to fix this by booting with the windows 7 64bit installation disc, selecting the repair option, opening a command prompt, and running the bcdboot command from there.nhb

So, I've learned that Windows takes absolutely no care in creating proper documentation on how to use their products, that I need to make sure I take notes to correct these errors in their books, and yet I still have more errors I need to track down.

Install several windows updates, requiring several reboots.

Now, yes, getting to the first process did take some time away from my schedule to deal with this issue, but being that I do this process many times a month, and I forsee us using windows 7 for a long time to come here, the time I will save with each windows 7 deployment will be far greater than the time it took me to figure out the issues of capturing and deploying windows 7 images.

accomplish one thing (that is already done if you purchase the computer) then why not just get a new machine. You figure, if he has to pretty much get the computer to square one, he still has to do all the other parts of IT by patching the machine back into the network. By purchasing a new computer, after labor and everything else, its probably splitting hairs, especially if you get them in large quantities.

Ghost is your friend, its how we do all our deployments. I haven't messed with WIM in 7 much, but from what I recall it was pretty straight forward. Windows 7 Installer I think was the name of the program, not sure 100%, but it pre-prepped everything for you, made the image, and you were set to roll.
