They say a backup plan is always a good thing. So, while trying to back up key folders on my Maxtor 80gb hard drive, the drive decided to die. IN addition to all my installers for all the progs I use, and all the sounds and resource files for all my keyboards, I lost my nhb radio folder which, among other things, contained all my full shows recorded to date. Everything from July 2001-Jun 2002, and 2003-2006 is gone. I have all the shows archived on other mmedia, i.e. cassettes and minidiscs up through February 8, 2006, when I ran out of minidiscs and didn't think to restock, since I archive the shows on the broadcast computer, then transfer them over the network to my main machine. If anybody has shows from fall 2005 through last week, including any impromptu shows I have done, please email damon@nhbradio.com. They need to be of decent sound quality and can't skip, which may be asking a lot, but hell, I'll take what I can get now. Also, any suggestions on trying to salvage the maxtor hard drive to at least transfer what I can from it would be hugely helpful. Basically, bios is not recognizing the drive and neither is Windows. No clicking is happening, which I suppose is good. The drive began giving CRC errors while transferring files over the network, then I couldn't play an mp3 file, then the system froze and that was the end. I did try going into the bios on my asus motherboard and primary slave shows blank, but when we press enter on it, it shows maxtor 81.9gb hard drive, but when we boot into windows, no drive d:, no mention of a disk drive in admin tools. I am stumped and really agitated right now. If anybody has thoughts, or suggestions, let me know. I need to get this data back. Thanks.

Hey Damon,
I MAY have a ray of light for you, but it may cost you a little money at first. If there is no 'clicking' sound from the drive, it may be just a control board problem (the circuit on the outside of the drive). Depending on the drive, and I think Maxtor’s have these, have a circuit board that is separate from the moving parts of the drive. If the moving parts are OK, you can get the data from the disk(s) inside the drive if you use a new control board. All you have to do is open up the PC, take out the drive and buy another one EXACTLY like it. Take the control board off the new one that you bought and put it on the old one that you have (if you can). Put the drive in your PC and grab the data off it. When you are done, put the new board back on the new drive and you MAY be able to return it (if you didn't bang it up too much) or keep it for you machine....

In any case, it is possible for you to get your data back. If the drive is dead, what have you got to loose?
Thanks
Fuzz

I think the drive was clicking as I tried to run spinrite 6 over the weekend. I am still researching other possibilities. Considering that this is an 80gb maxtor, I am not sure these drives are still available.

I appreciate it, but I don't think that will be necessary. I am going to send it off to a data recovery place and keep my fingers crossed that they can recover the data and they don't fuck me too hard.

You know that(data recovery) can cost between $300 and $3000 depending on drive size and how much damage is done. I have a 250GB with over 13,000 songs that crashed on me. I wanted to send it off but it was too expensive.

I got an estimate. Anywhere between $400 and $1100. They evaluate for free and they won't charge me if I  don't want to do it. Also, if they can't recover my files, they won't charge me. They have a 90 percent to 95 percent and sometimes 100 percent success rate. I have nothing to lose at this point but cash and these files are too important to give up without trying.
